Fall Sunday School

The Fall Sunday School program is well underway.  Our dedicated teachers welcomed children and youth back this fall with a lighthouse at the top of the stairs. You might be able to guess that the theme for fall is "Jesus is the Light of the World." Colorful wall decorations also declare the same message.

Remember that we have classes for all ages. Elementary classes are using David C. Cook materials. Children's Sunday school classes begin at 9:00 AM in the building across from One Main known as "The Station," and an adult class will be in the sanctuary, same time.

At 10:00 AM (the usual time) we'll begin worship.

Summer Sunday School

During the summer we abbreviate our Sunday morning schedule. Worship begins as always at 10:00 AM, and after the Children's Sermon the kids are dismissed from the service and go to "The Station" for a short Sunday school lesson. Marcia Harrington, our Education chairperson, administers this. She has prepared lessons on "Putting On the Whole Armour of God" for the entire summer, and volunteers have signed up to rotate as teachers.

This has been working very well. The kids like it. They get exposed to lots of adults they otherwise might not get to know well. The adults have an opportunity to serve, and might discover a rapport with kids that they didn't know they have. Perhaps they can become substitutes or regular teachers during the rest of the year. And, the parents can sleep in a little, not having to rush to church by 9:00 AM as they do the rest of the year.

Children's Sermons

We have lots of people who are skilled at inventing and delivering children's sermons, and early in the morning worship service the kids come forward for a message tailored especially for them. Among the children's "preachers" are Marcia Harrington, Mary McFarland, Barbara Sorensen, Woody Beach, Scott Angove, and others. Even the pastor has done it a couple of times.

Earlier in the summer, Marcia Harrington and Mary McFarland delivered a workshop at our District Conference on developing and delivering various types of children's sermons, and it went over very well. Although PGCF is small, children's worship is one of the strengths of our church.

The messages, though they're tailored for the kids, speak to the adults too. It has become an important way in which we worship God. Here is Woody Beach giving a children's sermon.
